How to add adjustable elastic cord on clothes

- Sewing activewear, Tutorials

Soft shell ski jacketThis is how you add adjustable elastic cord to a garment. Perfect for all sorts of activewear, like a windbreaker or ski jacket, fleece sweater or as a way to end the hems of hiking pants.

To make adjustable cord you need:

  • Elastic cording
  • Cord stoppers/toggles (I used plain silicon ones that I salvaged from an old jacket)
  • Eyelets and the proper tools
  • Interfacing
  • (Superglue)

Step 1. Apply two eyelets

Apply them fairly close together were your want to place the cord ends. Repeat on the other side of the hood/hem/sleeves or were you want the adjustable cording. Make sure the area of the eyelets are properly interface to avoid any tear.

Step 3. Thread the elastic cording

Then attach the end in the seam allowance. I also used super glue because the cording was hard to sew because it was so dense.

Step 5. Now close the casing

Since soft shell is hard to pin I used tape instead to keep the facing in place. Afterwards I just ripped off the tape, which didn’t hurt the top stitching.
