The big list of sewing podcasts

me headphones

Let’s talk about sewing podcasts! Personally, I love them and also I love that there are so many crafty podcasts out there these days. I find hearing other people talking about their crafts really inspiring and makes me want to do stuff even more. Plus it’s super interesting to get a behind-the-scenes look at the crafty world and the personalities that populate it. So I’ve compiled a list of crafty podcasts.

Sewing out Loud

What a fun podcast for us sewing super nerds! Hosted by a mother and daughter team they chat and banter about all things sewing related. This podcast is full of helpful tips and tricks,  with lots of machine talk (they used to run a sewing machine shop and are very big on Babylocks). They are strong in their opinions, but I find myself agreeing with a lot of the stuff they say.  If you want to become sewing smarter in just 30 minutes, this is the podcast for you.

Love to Sew

By Canadian sewing entrepreneurs Helen Wilkinson from Helen’s Closet and Caroline Somos of Black Bird Fabrics. They do both interviews with various sewing profiles, including yours truly, and make episodes around different sewing topics. The episode about perfection and sewing offered a lot of food for thought and I liked how they integrated voices from the listeners into the discussion. Great sound quality and a professional delivery right from the get-go, I really like this podcast and the hosts. There are in fact a lot Canadians doing sewing podcasts and what I will say now might sound a bit odd, but as a Swede, I can really resonate and connect with the tonality of those Canadian hosts. Perhaps it’s because we are both surrounded by cold weather and conifer!

Sew Organised Style

Hosted by super sewing veterans Anne Whalley, Maria Theoharous (Velosews) and Susan Goodwin from Measure twice cut once. Topics so far have included; How to succeed with online fabric shopping, Couture sewing and Refashion among other things.

Sew and Tell

Sew and Tell is published by the team behind the blog and magazine Sew Daily and Sew News. The podcast has three hosts, including Meg of Burdastyle.com fame, and it’s a bit like a sewing talk show, similar to Stitcher’s Brew in that sense. They have also started to feature guests in recent episodes such as legendary sewing blogger Erica Bunker. The production is very professional and the format is nicely structured, which I appreciate.

Clothes making mavens

A somewhat irregular podcast hosted by sewists Lori Beckstead and Helena Ashbridge. Mixes interviews with prolific sewists with themed chats about sewing things. The format is really professional with good sound quality and they also have some nice listener interactions features. I highly recommend the interview with Madame Tifaine about her year-long-ready-to-wear-fast.

Sewing with Threads podcast

Yes, the legendary Threads magazine has launched a podcast too. It looks like it will be a monthly occurrence and the format reminds me a bit of a traditional radio show, which I enjoy! After listening to the first two episodes I would say that this podcast is kinda geared to the more mature sewists if that makes sense. I’m definitely in that category myself and I appreciate the in-depth discussions plus it is light on the gushy stuff (which some podcasts can suffer from). So worth a listen for sure!

Craft Industry Alliance (formally While She Naps)

I really enjoy this crafty podcast because Abby Glassenberg is such a great interviewer that is not afraid to ask some prodding questions and doesn’t shy away from “touchy” topics like money and the more challenging sides to running crafty businesses. She isn’t as prone to gushing and saying things like “that’s fantastic” or “I love that” frequently, as some other podcast hosts have a habit of, and I appreciate that.

That Sewing Blab

A weekly livestream about all things sewing. Each week features a guest from the sewing community that is interviewed by the hosts Dawn and Althea. Not technically a podcast as it livestreams on Crowdcast each Tuesday at 7:30 EST US time and then is uploaded to Youtube afterwards. But it has everything else you want, plus the livestream format allows for viewers interaction such as asking questions in the chat room and even showing up on the screen if you like. A very clever format and something I think will grow in the future.

Modern Sewciety

This podcast has been going since 2014 and is a true sewing podcast veteran. Somewhat quilt focused, but there are also interviews with sewing bloggers, clothes pattern designers and other prolific garment makers. Great range of topics and I appreciate the host’s frank and honest approach.

Sy och sprätta

A Swedish sewing podcast that two of my online sewing mates have started. Sy och sprätta means Sew and rip in English. Is all about garment sewing!

Currently inactive

Maker Style

A podcast by Candian sewing enthusiast and blogger Rachel from Maker Style. The content is primarily geared towards the clothes sewing community and includes interviews with prolific sewing folks mixed with episodes containing helpful sewing tips and other cool stuff. Also some sewing business talk.

Declutter and Organize Your Sewing Space

A sewing space podcast hosted by professional declutterer and organizer Nadia Arbach. She also loves to sew and decided to combine those two interests into a sewing space themed podcast. The episodes cover everything from your ideal sewing space to overspending on hobbies and the mental blocks that comes with letting go of sewing things that you don’t actually use. Definitely a different perspective than your usual sewing podcast!

Crafty Planner

This podcast features interviews with people from various creative pursuits, including garment sewing. In the archive, there are interviews with both prolific sewists and indie pattern designers, including Peter Lappin from Male Bold Patterns, True Bias and Cashmerette. The interviews are through so a great way to learn more about the people and brands we encounter.

Stitcher’s Brew podcast

This one is by British prolific sewists and vloggers Gabby Young and Megan Valero. This podcast is lighthearted and chatty, kinda like a sewing meet-up! If you like listening to a bunch of friends having a fun chat this is definitely a podcast for you. So far they have featured interviews with some well-known sewing profiles, including Elisa Alix from By Hand London and Fiona Parker from Diary of a Chainstitcher.

Thread Cult

A sewing podcast that is really geared towards us who loves to make clothes. Journalist Christine Cyr Clisset interviews profiles in the sewing arena, such as Sarai Mitnick of Colette Patterns fame and sewing gurus like Claire Shaeffer and Angela Kane. Christine Cyr Clisset’s own sewing passion really shines through in the interviews, and the conversation style is very informal, like two friends chatting almost. Currently not updated much.

Seamwork Radio

Another crafty podcast entirely dedicated to sewing! From Colette Patterns headquarter, this podcast has an interesting angle as it approaches sewing from a transformative point of view where the guests share how sewing has shaped their life story. A lot of famous sewing community folks are interviewed and Colette founder Sarai Mitnick is the host. She has a great narrative voice, but this podcast doesn’t use the traditional interview format. Instead, it’s more of a guided monologue with the interviewee, intercepted with post-recorded comments by Sarai. Currently not updated much.

Craftsanity

The first ever crafty podcast and I’ve been listening to it since its inception in 2006. In fact this was the first podcast I ever listened to! Made by the journalist Jennifer Ackerman-Haywood, every episode features a long in-depth interview with a crafter. The audio quality isn’t always great, especially in the older episodes, but that comes with being a trailblazer!

Johanna, great suggestions! I’m always on the lookout for good sewing/crafting podcasts.

While not in the realm of sewing, I highly recommend The Unmistakeable Creative podcast. It’s interviews with people who’ve taken a creative angle on their business. It’s super inspiring and filled with deep thoughts about making stuff, challenging yourself, and challenging the status quo. I always feel smarter and fired up to DO SOMETHING when I listen!

P.S. My middle name is Johanna! High five!

Yay for another Johanna! I seldom encounter people online that share my name 🙂 And talk about serendipity when you mention The Unmistakable Podcast, I just discovered it two weeks ago and now have a goldmine of interviews to go through! I really like his diverse selection of interview subjects and his humble approach. Some podcasters in the personal development field take up so much space, that they almost drown the person that they are featuring, but this guy knows how to do it right!

I really enjoy your podcast and have listned to episodes while bike commuting to work. I especially enjoyed the behind the scenes interviews like the ones with The Fold Line and Indie Sew. I appreciate them being so transparent about what a hustle it is to make a sewing community site profitable and I loved that you picked that angle. Looking forward to hear more from you!

Hi Johanna! It was through the Love to Sew podcast that I found you! Thank you for the list. I’ve been binge listening to Love to Sew after doing the same with the Clothes Making Mavens. It was Lori from CMM that recommended Love to Sew. Both podcasts are like sitting down to chat with two friends. I look forward to checking out the others you’ve listed.

Cool! Agree, both these podcasts have such great rapport between the hosts and it really makes for a very comfortable listening. I really like both those podcasts, just wish that CMM was a bit more regular, but I’m very aware of the struggle of producing regular content!

Johanna, it may be time to update this list. Many are inactive. One new one is Sew and Tell.

Yes! The inactive ones are at the bottom, but I added a Currently inactive headline now to make it clearer (I still want to keep them, since I think they can provide value, even though they are not updated, as there is still a back catalogue). I will add the Sew and Tell shortly, once I have listened to a few episodes.

Great blog post! I think Crafty Planner is now inactive as well. She said in her last episode that she was going to move on to other things (unless she has changed her mind).

A wonderful service for us sewing addicts. Thank you. You have done all the research. I think that sewing out loud is the most informative. Loved to listen to vicki Hibbins but she seems to be no longer active.

I agree, Sewing Out Loud is so helpful, I learn so much each episode and yes a lot of craft podcasts seem to fizzle out, which I can totally understand because it’s a lot of work for sure!
