I wear cardigans like 300 days a year. Probably more to be honest, because even during warm summer days I wear thin lace cotton cardigans as a form of extra sun protection. That is why I make mostly short sleeve tops and dresses, because they are easier and less bulky to wear with cardigans. My love for this garment means I have more than a dozen cardigans and at least half of them are me-made. Figuring out the best ways to sew cardigans has been an ongoing obsession of mine and has resulted in a wide variety of styles. And in this video I show some of my favourite me-made cardigans.

Love all your cardigans Johanna but especially your latest red one from your self drafted pattern. I have the Silhouette #195 but I haven’t used it yet. I too love cardi’s – it’s critical to get the fabric JUST RIGHT. It has to have body, some degree of warmth BUT not too heavy or warm. My favourites have always been in 100% cotton that’s just the right thickness. I’m still a little nervous about getting it just right but when I return to making knits (I’ve been on a cotton woven blouse binge for the past few months) I’m going to pull out that #195 and give it a go. The shell that comes with that pattern also looks fabulous. She does a lot of videos online using that shell pattern – it’s a great wardrobe basic.

Yes getting the fabric right is key! Luckily the selection has improved, at least here in Sweden the last few years. Working with double knit in any material (cotton, rayon, wool) is probably my fave material as it is so easy to sew, but I love the open knit/crochet ones too (but a bit harder to sew)
