Video: Tips on how to create sewing content

Creating content around sewing comes in many forms these days, it can be everything from a short post in a Facebook sewing group or a pic on Instagram to long form blog tutorials, a vlog or even a podcast. But finding ideas to share is not always easy, especially for those of us who don’t sew tons of garments each month. So I decided to a video about sewing content creation on different platforms and give loads of concrete actionable content ideas. Plus I share what type of content I want to see more of in the sewing community.

In my video about sewing content creation I talk about how to:

  • Improve your sewing content
  • Sewing content creation on different platforms, such as Instagram, blogs, YouTube and Facebook
  • Concrete actionable content ideas for sewing
  • How you can get six or more content posts from just one garment
  • What sort of content I want to see more of in the sewing community
  • How to plan your sewing content using an editorial calendar or just the notes app on your cellphone
  • The game of comparison in the sewing world
  • How to make content for several weeks in one day and the value of batch production
  • The importance of pacing yourself and avoiding a content creation burn-out (been there, done that!)

What I don’t address in the video, but I also want to mention is the fact that I took a long, unplanned break, from sewing content creation when I broke my wrist back in 2012. And while consistency is incredibly important if momentum and growth is what you are looking for, taking a break can be a great thing to reassess your work and get some new mojo. So I have no regrets about taking that break, even though it was not planned.

And if you want to hear even more on this subject, check out Maker Style who has done a whole podcast-series on this called Blogger Blueprint. Also for budding sewing YouTubers, watch Sewing Reports video on the realities of being a sewing YouTuber (I co-sign everything).

I would love to hear your thoughts on this.  What content do you want to see more of? Or perhaps less? And do you have any struggles when it comes to content creation?

This is just what I need to get back to blogging! It became too much of a chore to figure out what I wanted to post , so this is timely. The other issue I’ve got is photographing my new outfits on me. That I still have to figure out.

I hear you on the chore and photo thingie. What I ended up doing is having/training my 15-year old daughter to take most of my pics, and is has been a game changer. She gets paid for her work and likes photography, so it’s a win-win. I do sometimes bring out my tripod and remote, and they help too, but having help makes it so much easier. Hope you can find a similar solution!
