Button masala

October 5, 2010 4 Comments

Last weekend I went to a fashion fair (which I might talk more about in a separate post) and one of things that caught my eyes was the intricate covered button work by fashion designer Anuj Sharma. I assume it’s a take on a traditional Indian technique, but I am not sure really.

There was even an instructional flyer handed out at the booth (click to see a larger picture), but I can’t say that I have tried it yet! This type of intricate handiwork is a bit beyond my patience level (see ingredient #3 on the flyer), but it’s cool to see what you can achieve with just some fabric and buttons.

What this reminds me of is the tie dyed fabrics that are tied off like the buttons in the clothing. I never saw anything that uses buttons specifically in clothing when I was in India.

The pictures remind me of smocking. I can't wait to hear more about the fair!
