Western style blouse with puffed sleeves

Another stash blasting project, using a fabric I bought in 2011 and a Burdastyle pattern from issue 2/2005. Seriously folks don’t throw out your old Burdastyle magazines! (I have been guilty of this too, but no more). Admittedly I don’t currently make anything from my 80’s and early 90’s  pattern magazines. But alas that time will come too I’m sure. In fact when I linked to my post about the old magazines, I was thinking; “hey that stuff don’t look bad at all!”

Okay, so over to the shirt that I made. It has lot of nice details, like a bias cut yoke, puff sleeves and snap-on buttons. The fabric is a cotton seersucker shirting that is pretty similar to the original Burda magazine style. In fact the only design change I did was omitting the piping that runs along the yoke, because sometimes I just don’t want the extra hassle.

It is unusual that I follow the original design as close as I did this time . The magazine version does look pretty snug. In reality the fit is a bit looser, but definitely formfitting, with darts, shaped side seams and a shaped back seam (love that, I always get a sack in the back otherwise). Also the puff sleeves are considerably bigger than the photo suggests.

The curved back seam is there, but it is almost impossible to see,

And a close up of the puff sleeves. My wardrobe is full of puff sleeves, maybe I am overdoing it? Or maybe we can just call it my signature style ;). Read my review over at Patternreview,

Love western shirts! Agreed on never throwing them out. My hubby used one to hold a paint can and he couldn't understand why I went bonkers! Karen

What a great shirt, and I totally agree about perusing old Burda magazines for sewing right now. It seems like the older magazines have more interesting details anyway, like your puffed sleeve Western shirt, it’s absolutely fabulous. You did a great job matching the plaid too.
