Burdastyle empire waist dress

So I’m back to the regular work schedule today after the holidays. I’m happy to say that I at least got 50 percent of my planned holiday sewing done. And I even bought some collar fabric yesterday for the second dress that was on my to-do-list. Shopping counts as working on a project too, doesn’t it?

I really enjoyed making this Burdastyle dress, it’s so different in regards to what I normally do, with fun details such as batwing sleeves, a little shirring and nifty pockets that are decorated with grosgrain ribbons.

The fabric is a soft rayon that I bought in Lisbon a few years ago. Rayon prints can often be quite romantic and flowery so I was happy to find this unusual graphic print in mustard and brown. I just wish they did more rayon prints like this one. Rayon is also so nice to work with, especially compared to silk which always seem to challenge me, regardless of what project I choose. The only issue I had was too little fabric, so I had to do a few alterations to the pattern, such as shorten the sleeves and doing a rolled hem instead of doing the sleeves in double layers a per Burdastyle’s instructions. Also I had to take in the dress a bit, so the hem is slightly narrower than the original pattern.

Also this dress is so comfortable and thanks to the front and back elastic and the back ties it is very easy to archive a good fit, even though the dress is quite roomy.  I highly recommend making this pattern.

My review of the pattern

I love this, it looks terrific on you. I love that mustard colour but it doesn't suit my skin tone. I have looked at those types of Burda patterns for a long time. I love rayon.. it's my favourite fabric, and even though I love the florals, I also wish there was more different prints too.

I like florals too, but so agree that it would be great if such a wonderful fabric had more print options. I do think rayon is making a bit of a comeback in RTW so hopefully that will trickle down to us fabric shoppers too.
