Video: Why I began sewing my own clothes

- Life of Johanna, Video

It’s video time! The format is a little different from my usual videos, as it’s me telling the story of why I began sewing and what it was like sewing in the 80’s and early 90’s. I’m sure some of you old timers can relate, it was very different before the sewing internet happened. In the video I talk about my first makes, how I used visit fabric stores after school and drool over the glamours Vogue designer patterns and how hard it was to find info on a lot of sewing techniques that are now just a Google search or a Facebook group away. And of course, I will give you the backstory on how my obsession with German pattern magazines started. Plus I will show you the only garment I have left from that time period!

Seven sewing mistakes I did as a beginner

I’m switching to Tuesday schedule for my videos for the rest of December since the biggest holidays of the year in Sweden (New Year’s Eve and X-mas Eve) are both on a weekend this year. Plus I will release the book on Tuesday the 12 of December (so close, but still so much to do!) and I want to make a release video about the book on that day as well. More info on the book will come this Tuesday!

Thank you for the video, I really enjoyed hearing about your early sewing experiences. I started a bit later than you, when I was 12-13 years old in the early 90s, but our stories are quite similar. Just like you, I was drawn to a vintage/classic style from an early age and some my earliest garments were made with my mum’s old patterns from the 70s. I also wore and refashioned her old clothes, I fondly remember a black velour mini dress with a diagonal red stripe across the chest made of my mum’s old bath robe. It turned out to be too tight beneath the armpit, a problem that I solved by ‘inventing’ an underarm gusset. Needless to say, I knew very little about fit and for a long time I would just sew up a pattern as is and hope for the best! Starting to sew seems so much easier nowadays. The internet holds such a wealth of information and I think that my skills would have improved more quickly if I had had access to all these tutorials and pattern reviews at an earlier stage. At least I would have known that it wasn’t just me who could only understand half of the instructions in the Burda magazines!
