Time for another livestream on YouTube. And this time I will talk about one of my all-time favourite sewing topics, namely textile science and how to pick the right fabric for any project.
TOPICS I PLAN TO COVER IN THE LIVESTREAM
- Fabric weights and drape
- How to tell if a fabric is of poor quality or good?
- Why both stretch and recovery matters when sewing with knits
- Nature vs man-made fibres. Pros and cons
- Altering patterns for different types of fabrics
- Why some fabrics pill
- Eco-friendlier fabrics
When I did my livestream about pattern making I told you about the classes I have taken, and that pattern making is something I actually have a few diplomas in. Well, I wish I could say the same about textile science, but the reality is that I’m actually a textile science drop-out, lol!
The short story is that I took a university course on the topic in 2009, bought the books, did some studies and went to a couple of the classes but never did the exam. I just couldn’t find the time, especially since the school was in another city, more than 1 hour away and I had to take a few classes there. With me being a single mom with fairly young children at that time, working full time and all that – well it turned out I am not Super Women after all (go figure!).
Also, I wrote this at the time:
I’m currently taking a university class in textile science. It’s mostly a distance course and it’s highly theoretical. Sometimes it feels more like I’m taking a chemistry class and my brain has been out of school for so long that I have a hard time grasping all this stuff.
So maybe I was also feeling the study overwhelm? Anyhow, the good news is that I still learned a ton and even did a five-part blog series about called Fabric Facts that I think I should adapt and perhaps make a video series? Plus I think I have become pretty adept at choosing the right fabrics for projects, mostly because I have made so many mistakes in the past, which I also want to talk about in the chat!
Plus answer your questions in the chat, share tips and all that good stuff! Hope to see to see you there on Sunday!
