Live on Sunday: How to pick the right fabric

March 23, 2018 2 Comments

Time for another livestream on YouTube. And this time I will talk about one of my all-time favourite sewing topics, namely textile science and how to pick the right fabric for any project.

TOPICS I PLAN TO COVER IN THE LIVESTREAM

  • Fabric weights and drape
  • How to tell if a fabric is of poor quality or good?
  • Why both stretch and recovery matters when sewing with knits
  • Nature vs man-made fibres. Pros and cons
  • Altering patterns for different types of fabrics
  • Why some fabrics pill
  • Eco-friendlier fabrics

When I did my livestream about pattern making I told you about the classes I have taken, and that pattern making is something I actually have a few diplomas in. Well, I wish I could say the same about textile science, but the reality is that I’m actually a textile science drop-out, lol!

The short story is that I took a university course on the topic in 2009, bought the books, did some studies and went to a couple of the classes but never did the exam. I just couldn’t find the time, especially since the school was in another city, more than 1 hour away and I had to take a few classes there. With me being a single mom with fairly young children at that time, working full time and all that – well it turned out I am not Super Women after all (go figure!).

Also, I wrote this at the time:

I’m currently taking a university class in textile science. It’s mostly a distance course and it’s highly theoretical. Sometimes it feels more like I’m taking a chemistry class and my brain has been out of school for so long that I have a hard time grasping all this stuff.

So maybe I was also feeling the study overwhelm? Anyhow, the good news is that I still learned a ton and even did a five-part blog series about called Fabric Facts that I think I should adapt and perhaps make a video series? Plus I think I have become pretty adept at choosing the right fabrics for projects, mostly because I have made so many mistakes in the past, which I also want to talk about in the chat!

Plus answer your questions in the chat, share tips and all that good stuff! Hope to see to see you there on Sunday!

Details about the livestream

When: Sunday 25th March. 8 PM Central European Time/2 PM US Eastern Standard Time (unless I’m missing some daylight savings). Your local time will be shown on the YouTube stream homepage.

So sorry I missed the live stream! Weekends are difficult for me to be on social media…weekend is hubby time since we don’t see much of each other during the week. I watched the replay and thought it was an awesome discussion of fabrics! I never knew there was a difference between linens! More expensive doesn’t grow as much as the lesser price? Who knew…now I do, LOL! I also loved when you mentioned spandex in fabrics (specifically linen!). I too love having some stretch in my fabrics! (because I love knit fabrics most!) Rayon Ponte is a favorite for me too…I plan on making a new cardi out of some very soon! Again, great video!

So happy that YouTube makes it possible for replays, timing a livestream is hard for sure! I talked about it with my husband this morning how amazing it is that so many people are able and willing to turn in and watch live even, as you say we do have life outsides social media and devoting time to it does eat up a lot of time! Yes after we have gotten the taste for spandex there is no turning back. I’m so grateful that most of my trousers have spandex these days, since if there is one thing I hate it is wearing uncomfortable trousers!
