Video: Can I sew full-time? Taking a break from my day-job

As I’ve mentioned previously I’m currently on a break from my day-job, so that I can focus full-time on my sewing business and hopefully avoiding a looming burn-out.

So in my latest video, I share my plans moving forward, the financial realities of creating a sustainable income from a craft enterprise, which I think sometimes get lost in the narrative of following your passion and building a lifestyle business. And of course, I also talk about all the other struggles I’m currently facing!

That said, overall these first weeks have been feeling pretty great, and I’ve accomplished so much it almost feels surreal, especially compared to when I had to squeeze in little bits in the early morning or late at night, while often also feeling tired and not 100% on my game so to speak.

Currently I’m around 2/3 done with my first garment sewing pattern, and next week I will hopefully be able to start sewing up the various style and samples.

Plus I’ve almost produced 20% of the pages of my upcoming jeans sewing book (out in April of next year!), which might not sound a lot, but since I’m still doing it all by myself (writing, photography, book design) every page is a lot of work!

How exciting and scary at the same time! I think you’re very brave and know you’ll make the best use of your “sabbatical.” The only advice I can offer is not to underprice your teaching services in Oslo. You should pay yourself what you’re worth over and above your traveling expenses. You have a lot to offer! Greatest of luck, Johanna!

Good luck Johanna, it all sounds very exciting 😀 I have your fantastic coverstitch book which has been the perfect guide to buying coverstitch machine and an inspiration for me to make my own clothes. Thank you so very much, looking forward to following your new adventure.

How exciting!!!! You have so much planned to do in 6 months! I think it’s great that Sweden has such a program for you.
