Color block workout shorts

Workout set: Color block

Here are  the matching shorts for my color block workout set. As the top the shorts are made of several different pieces and the challenge was creating various shapes that wasn’t too tricky to assemble as I wanted to make sure the end result looked good too.

For the back pocket I used Sewaholic’s back pocket tutorial for her Pacific leggings pattern as a guide. I didn’t topstitch the zipper though as found it kept well in place without it. I first did a welt zipper pocket, which I usually do on my leggings. However the pocket piece was so big that it didn’t keep its shape when I put my cellphone in it, so I had to rethink the design and then Sewaholic’s method just seemed quicker. I highly recommend her tutorial (and the Pacific leggings look great too)

For workout shorts I prefer cuffs rather than a regular hem. Firstly I find that cuffs keep the shorts from riding up as much and secondly coverstitching can sometimes be a bear, especially since I need to switch a lot of things on my serger in order to use the coverstitch. I used nice quality supplex for these shorts and the wicking properties are excellent. I bought both fabrics from UK Ebay sellers, but sadly both the navy and the black fabric seems no longer to be in stock.

Great shorts! Thanks for the tip about the cuffs; I didn't know that cuffs help prevent ride-up.

I didn't either until I bought a pair of cycling shorts from Pearl izumi that only had cuffs and no silicon band and to my surprise they stayed put. I've tried this on several shorts now and it works, but stable ribbing works better than softer fabrics, and they still do ride up a bit, but not like all the way to the crotch!
