I’ve been really into pleated skirts lately. Some are more complicated like the Carven knock-off that I did last year. And other, like this Burdastyle skirt is quite straightforward, just two generous pleats on each side, a regular zip fly and classic pockets. Come to think about it this skirt shares many design elements with a classic trouser design, the pattern even has welt pockets in the back. However they are completely useless and just for decoration and I opted out from making proper ones, because sometimes it is nice to take shortcuts and not make every project overly complicated.
The fabric I used is a soft cotton chambray that is a dream to wear, so light and it falls very nicely. I should however taken into account the softness when I interfaced the waist band, because I used a too soft fusible, hence why the waist band and fly placket wrinkle a bit.

In Sweden we call the trouser style with generous front pleats “old man pants”. I’m curious if there is an English generic term for this type of trousers too?¨

Burda labels this a “mini skirt” and I did my usual petite alteration to keep the length intact with the original design. But for those who prefer a below the knee length this pattern also has a longer version. The pattern is from the May 2012 issue of Burdastyle

December 23, 2015 at 3:28 pmYour skirt is very cute. You might like the Deer and Doe Chardon skirt or the Sewaholic Crescent skirt (that one is actually gathered not pleated, but has a bit of the same look). I made both and liked both, although my preference is for the Crescent because I find the yoke both flattering and comfortable. The Chardon can make me feel a bit too cinched in. Interesting, I've heard the term "old man pants" here in America…it may not be that common, but I know I've heard it.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

December 27, 2015 at 12:25 pmI love the Deer and Doe Chardon skirt. Thank you for pointing me in that direction, had not heard of that pattern company before. And the waistband of Crescent does indeed look very comfortable. Happy holidays to you too!

December 27, 2015 at 12:27 pmThank you! We have such a short season for shorter skirts here in Sweden so thick opaque tights are my best friend during the rest of the year 🙂
