How to Line Mittens: Step-by-Step Tutorial

Sewing lining on mittens: A step by step tutorial.

You can easily add lining to my Tova mittens. I explain the simple way of sewing lining on the mittens in the instructions that come with the sewing pattern. But we all love to learn some next level sewing techniques, right?

So in this tutorial, I’ll show you how to add a lining with no visible seam allowance, inspired by the bagging methods used in the garment industry (sometimes also referred to as a burrito method).

The great thing about this method is that it hides the seam allowance at the cuffs, making sure the mittens are totally rub-free, which we all love I’m sure!

1. Mark two notches at the tip of the lining pieces for the glove pieces

The distance should be around 2.5 cm/1 inches. This will be the opening.

Option 1. Slip-stitch the lining by hand

This the most discreet way, and provides a beautiful result.

Option 2. Machine stitch over the opening.

Fold in the edges and then stitch close to the edge, using a narrow zigzag stitch.

9. Push in the lining

Make sure the lining also goes inside the thumb

Bonus tip:

Tack stitches at the tip of the thumb and at the lower edge of the mittens to keep the lining in place (optional)
