Video: Sewing Fold-Over Elastic: 5 tips for Success

Sewing fold-over elastic is one of those seemingly easy procedures that can still cause us some grief, especially when it comes to figuring out the right amount of stretch and how to keep in place when stitching since it can be a bit slippery.

I use a lot of fold-over elastic myself, especially for the activewear I sew. So over the years, I’ve done a lot of experimenting with different methods to see which ones that yield the best result.

I’m happy to report that I now have a really good process for sewing fold-over elastic, and since I regularly get questions about this, I figured it was time to make a video with my top tips.

I really appreciate these videos that complement your book. It is too bad you don’t have a whole series of them done for each section of the book. I have been struggling working with very stretchy knits and just starting to sew more active wear. Most of my stretch fabric to this point has been polar fleece (which is easy to work with and very forgiving) and wovens with up to 5% lycra, also easy to work with. It has been taking me time to work with more stretchy 4 way knits with the serger and takes a lot of adjustments so i don’t get a giant wavy in the serged seam.
